Petrarch
In 1347, one of the founders of humanism and of our Western European culture died: Francis Petrarch (Francesco Petrarca). In his countless written works, he sought to transcend the dark atmosphere of the Middle Ages by making room for the individual and reason. He was the first in Europe to devote himself intensively to the study of classical antiquity.
The Canzoniere is one of Petrarch’s most famous works. It is a collection of 366 sonnets and canzones in Italian. They form the basis of our program. The Canzoniere consists of two parts: the first deals with Laura while she was still alive. The second is poignantly dedicated entirely to his unwavering love, even after her death. His love for Laura de Noves, a married woman he met on Good Friday in Avignon in 1327, forms the central theme. Because of her unattainability, this form of love was often considered the truest in the Renaissance. Laura continued to inspire Petrarch throughout his life.
Even today, the poetic sound of this masterful poetry continues to inspire many composers. We selected composers who resided in or traveled to Italy during the 16th century and encountered his poetry there.
Ensemble
The ensemble is led by Adelheid Glatt from the neighboring municipality of Beert (Pepingen) and focuses primarily on Renaissance music. However, they are also happy to expand their repertoire to include Baroque music. The ensemble is always formed according to the program.
Astrid Houthuys from Halle (editor-in-chief of De Standaard) will explain between the pieces what made the love between Petrarch and Laura so special, inspiring Petrarch to write a book of 366 poems, all dedicated to this remarkable woman, Laura.
Consorto Etereo:
Jana Pieters – soprano
Aline Hopchet – recorders and crooked horn
Thomas Langlois – lute, guitar
Liam Fennelly and Adelheid Glatt – viola da gamba
Astrid Houthuys – speaker
Program
While the music of the grand masters of polyphony already captures the imagination, Consorto Etereo aims to add an extra dimension in this program: shedding light on the canzoniere, the voluminous works of Francis Petrarch. The moving story of Petrarch and his muse, Laura, is central to our program.
