La Belle Époque
Recital for soprano and piano

In the enchanting atmosphere of Villa Servais, soprano Helga Van Campenhout and pianist Pascale del Marmol pay tribute to ‘La Belle Époque,’ an era of refinement, emotion, and musical innovation.
With songs by Fauré, Debussy, Hahn, Massenet, and Poulenc, the richness of French vocal art unfolds: from impressionistic soundscapes to playful modernity. Misia Sert and Claude Debussy had a close bond. Misia was a pianist who befriended many artists of the Belle Époque.

Performance at 6:00 PM
Tickets: 20€

Misia was the granddaughter of François Servais and spent her youth at Villa Servais. Strauss adds deeply romantic lyricism, while Gershwin blends Parisian elegance with American flair.
In addition to these songs, you will hear a nocturne by Chopin, poet of the piano, whose music influenced the emotional world of ‘La Belle Époque’.
An intimate recital that revives the timeless beauty and imagination of a golden age. A century in which François Servais, the renowned cello virtuoso and resident of this villa, was also known as a bridge-builder between cultures and styles. Misia grew up in this musical environment, imbued with the spirit of her grandfather, and would later become the beating heart of the artistic scene of ‘La Belle Époque’.
This program reflects the spirit of this artistic encounter.

Consorto Etereo – Petrarch’s words become music

Francis Petrarch, a founder of humanism, sought to transcend the darkness of the Middle Ages in his works by focusing on the individual and reason. His most famous work, Canzoniere, contains 366 sonnets about his love for Laura, an unattainable woman who inspired him throughout his life. This theme continues to influence composers today.

The ensemble Consorto Etereo, led by Adelheid Glatt, presents a program that combines Petrarch’s poetry and Renaissance music. Music from the 16th century adds an extra dimension to the Canzoniere and illuminates the story of Petrarch and Laura

Petrarch

In 1347, one of the founders of humanism and of our Western European culture died: Francis Petrarch (Francesco Petrarca). In his countless written works, he sought to transcend the dark atmosphere of the Middle Ages by making room for the individual and reason. He was the first in Europe to devote himself intensively to the study of classical antiquity.

The Canzoniere is one of Petrarch’s most famous works. It is a collection of 366 sonnets and canzones in Italian. They form the basis of our program. The Canzoniere consists of two parts: the first deals with Laura while she was still alive. The second is poignantly dedicated entirely to his unwavering love, even after her death. His love for Laura de Noves, a married woman he met on Good Friday in Avignon in 1327, forms the central theme. Because of her unattainability, this form of love was often considered the truest in the Renaissance. Laura continued to inspire Petrarch throughout his life.

Even today, the poetic sound of this masterful poetry continues to inspire many composers. We selected composers who resided in or traveled to Italy during the 16th century and encountered his poetry there.

Ensemble
The ensemble is led by Adelheid Glatt from the neighboring municipality of Beert (Pepingen) and focuses primarily on Renaissance music. However, they are also happy to expand their repertoire to include Baroque music. The ensemble is always formed according to the program.
Astrid Houthuys from Halle (editor-in-chief of De Standaard) will explain between the pieces what made the love between Petrarch and Laura so special, inspiring Petrarch to write a book of 366 poems, all dedicated to this remarkable woman, Laura.

Consorto Etereo:
Jana Pieters – soprano
Aline Hopchet – recorders and crooked horn
Thomas Langlois – lute, guitar
Liam Fennelly and Adelheid Glatt – viola da gamba
Astrid Houthuys – speaker

Program
While the music of the grand masters of polyphony already captures the imagination, Consorto Etereo aims to add an extra dimension in this program: shedding light on the canzoniere, the voluminous works of Francis Petrarch. The moving story of Petrarch and his muse, Laura, is central to our program.

As a response to Impressionism with its vague figures, Art Nouveau emerged—clearly inspired by nature, its organic, concrete lines, and also by Japanese art. The style had only a brief moment in the spotlight, and perhaps that’s why it feels to us like an impossible dream — a place where it’s wonderfully pleasant to linger.

Astrid and Emma Wauters will perform music by Thevenet’s contemporaries Gabriel Fauré, Joseph Jongen, and Maurice Ravel, on cello and harp.
